- press closely, of crowds, τινα Ev.Luc. 8.42; σ. τὸ σπέρμα choke it, Ev.Marc. 4.7: metaph., σ. τὸν λόγον Ev.Matt. 13.22, cf. Ev.Luc. 8.14:—Pass., δένδρα συμπνιγόμενα Thphr. CP 6.11.6; οἱ ἄνθρακες συμπνίγονται are damped down, Sch. Ar. Nu. 96.
