  • III band, orchestra, Ἑλληνικά 1.19 (Gytheum, i A.D.), PFlor. 74.5 (ii A.D.), POxy. 1275.9 (iii A.D.), and so perh. in Plb. 26.1.4, 30.26.8, but used of a musical instrument in LXX Da. 3.5; so Lat. symphonia, of a kind of drum, Isid. Etym. 3.22.14, but of a wind instrument, Plin. HN 8.157; symphoniae et cymbala strepitusque, Cels. 3.18.10; ἤκουσε συμφωνίας καὶ χορῶν Ev.Luc. 15.25.

συμφωνία, ἡ, wie συμφώνησις, das Zusammenstimmen, -klingen, der Einklang, Plat. Symp. 187b ; ξυμφωνίᾳ τινὶ καὶ ἁρμονίᾳ προσέοικε, Rep. IV.430e, u. öfter, auch übertr. – In der alten Musik:
   1) die drei Konsonanzen der Quarte, Quinte u. Octave, διὰ τεσσάρων, διὰ πέντε, διὰ πασῶν, sc. χορδῶν, die dah. zusammen τὰ σύμφωνα heißen, während die übrigen Intervalle, welche zur ἐμμέλεια gehören, ἐμμελῆ genannt werden, vgl. Plut. de ει ap. Delph. 10.
   2) ein Konzert (von mehrern Stimmen oder Instrumenten im Einklang), μετὰ κερατίου καὶ συμφωνίας, Pol. 26.10.5.
