θοός, (ΘΥ, θέω, nicht mit θήγω zusammenhangend, wie Buttmann Lexil. II p. 60 will):
1. schnell, rasch, von Menschen rasch zur Tat (vgl. ὠκύς, ταχύς); Ἄρης, Il. 5.430 u. öfter ; Hektor, 8.215, andere Helden, πολεμιστής 5.571 ; auch c. inf., ἐπεὶ θοὸς ἔσκε μετὰ πρώτοισι μάχεσθαι 5.536 ; χείρ, 12.306, schnelle Hand ; von leblosen Dingen, bes. das Schiff, 14.410 u. sonst ; Od. 7.34 ist verbunden νηυσὶ θοῇσι τοίγε πεποιθότες ὠκείῃσιν, ohne daß sich ein Unterschied machen läßt, als daß ὠκύς die wirkliche Schnelligkeit mehr hervorhebt ; ἅρμα, Il. 17.458 ; μάστιξ, die schnell geschwungene, wo man nicht an eine trans. Bdtg »schnell machend« zu denken hat, 17.430 ; βέλος, Od. 22.83 ; θοὴν ἀλεγύνετε δαῖτα, 8.38, besorget ein Mahl, das flink da ist ; θοὴ νύξ, Il. 10.394 u. öfter, die schnelle, schnell hereinbrechende Nacht, die überdies mit Rossen daher fahrend gedacht wird, wie Hes. Th. 481 ; Buttmann a.a.O. erkl. es »die jähe Nacht« u. findet darin nicht bloß den schnellen Einbruch, sondern auch das Schreckliche u. Gefährliche bezeichnet ; Pind. nennt häufig das Schiff so, wie den Wagen u. die Rosse, auch ἄκων, N. 10.69, ἀγώνων ἀκτίς, P. 11.48, μάχαι, 8.27 ; Aesch. πτερύγων θοαῖς ἁμίλλαις Prom. 129, πόλιν διήκει θοὰ βάξις Ag. 463 ; Soph. πῶλοι, El. 727, νῆες, Aj. 696, νύμφα, Tr. 854, θοὸν εἰρεσίας ζυγόν, die schnelle Ruderbank, für »die Bank des schnellen Ruderns«, Aj. 249 ; vgl. θοαὶ εἰρεσίαι Orph. Arg. 1040 ; Eur. ἅμʼ ἠελίου πτέρυγι θοῇ, Ion 123, πνοιαί, Andr. 479, αὖραι, Troad. 454, sonst von Schiffen u. Rossen, wie auch Ar. u. sp.D.; θοὸν σάκος Ap.Rh. 1.743. Selten in Prosa, Plat. Crat. 422e nur zur Ableitung von ἀγαθός.
1. Mit der Schnelligkeit hängt zusammen die Bdtg des schnell Eindringenden, spitz, scharf ; so νῆσοι θοαί, mit spitzen Klippen ins Meer scharf vorspringende Inseln, Od. 15.299 ; vgl. Strab. VIII.351. So bes. sp.D., θοοὶ γόμφοι Ap.Rh. 2.79, ὀδόντες 3.1281, πελέκεσσι 4.1683.

θοός (θέω): swift, quick; of night, ‘swift - descending,’ because night in the countries of the Mediterranean follows the setting of the sun more speedily than with us (cf. Od. 2.388); θοαὶ νῆσοι, islands ‘swiftly flitting by’ and sinking in the horizon, Od. 15.299.— Adv., θοῶς.
