σταθμός, ὁ, in Trag., etc., with heterocl. pl. σταθμά, S. Ph. 489, OT 1139, E. HF 999, X. Eq. 4.3, etc.; σταθμοί however occurs not only in Hom. (v. infr.), but in E. Andr. 280, Or. 1474 (both lyr.):—

• standing-place for animals, farmstead, steading, τὼ μὲν (the lions) ἄρʼ, ἁρπάζοντε βόας καὶ ἴφια μῆλα, σταθμοὺς ἀνθρώπων κεραΐζετον Il. 5.557, cf. 12.304; κατὰ σταθμοὺς δύεται 5.140; κατὰ σ. ποιμνήϊον 2.470; σταθμῷ ἐν οἰοπόλῳ 19.377, cf.     • 4 quarter of a town, PRyl. 102.8 (ii A.D.).
    • 5 in Persia, of stations or stages on the royal road, where the king rested in travelling, σ. βασιλήϊοι Hdt. 5.52, cf. 6.119, Plu. Art. 25: hence in reference to Persia, of distances, a dayʼs march (about 5 parasangs or 150 stades), X. An. 1.2.10; posting-station in the desert, σ. καὶ φρούρια OGI 701.13 (Egypt, ii A.D., pl.).

σταθμός, ὁ (ἵστημι, vgl. στάθμη), bei den Attikern nicht selten mit dem heterogenischen plur. τὰ σταθμά,
1) ein aufrecht stehender Pfosten, Pfeiler, Ständer ; bei Hom. bald von dem Hauptpfeiler, welcher die Decke eines Gemaches trägt, στῆ ῥα παρὰ σταθμὸν τέγεος, Od. 1.333, 8.458 u. öfter. vgl. 17.96, bald von den Türpfosten, ἐν δὲ σταθμοὺς ἄρσε, θόρας δʼ ἐπέθηκε, 21.45 ; θύρας σταθμοῖσιν ἐπῆρσεν, Il. 14.167, 339 ; ἀργύρεοι σταθμοὶ ἐν χαλκέῳ ἕστασαν οὐδῷ, Od. 7.89 ; παρὰ σταθμοῖσιν ἐπʼ οὐδοῦ, 10.62, u. sonst ; Soph. Haustiere stehen u. sich aufhalten, Stall ; bei Hom. durchgängig von ländlichen Wohnungen, Gehöft, wo bes. an Viehställe zu denken, κατὰ σταθμὸν ποιμνήϊον Il. 2.470, μυῖαι σταθμῷ ἔνι 16.642, u. öfter ; vgl. noch σταθμὸν δὲ κύνες καὶ βώτορες ἄνδρες ῥύατʼ ὄπισθε μένοντες, Od. 17.200 ; in Gleichnissen der Löwe erwähnt, der in solch Gehöft einbricht, um Vieh zu rauben ; Il. 18.589 ist verbunden (οἰῶν) σταθμούς τε κλισίας τε κατηρεφέας ἰδὲ σηκούς, im plur., wie Hes. Soldaten auf dem Marsche. – Im persischen Reiche hießen σταθμοί die Orte, wo der König auf seinen Reisen einzukehren u. zu übernachten pflegte, eine Art Etappen oder Stationen, βασιλήϊοι σταθμοί, Her. 2.152, 6.119 ; dah. in Beschreibung persischer Gegenden als Bestimmung der Entfernung, eine Tagereise, ein Tagemarsch, gew. eine Strecke von fünf Parasangen, oft bei Xen. An., z.B. 1.2.5 ; doch hing es jedesmal vom Feldherrn ab, wie lang er die σταθμοί machen wollte, vgl. 2.2.12.
